The Walking Dead renewed for a sixth season on AMC

On October 7 Variety reported that the popular television drama "The Walking Dead" has been renewed for a sixth season on AMC. The news comes less than one week before the fifth season of the series will debut with sixteen new episodes. The series continues to break ratings records and is only getting more popular. A sixth season will be filmed in the summer of 2015 with a fall 2015 release.

Scott Gimple will return as show runner for the new season, and Robert Kirkman will once again serve as an executive producer along with Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert, and Tom Luse. AMC president Charlie Collier mentioned that "AMC proudly confirms a six season order," and that the series is currently the highest rates cable series of all time. The show is the most watched series among adults eighteen to forty-nine.

The new season will once again feature sixteen episodes which will be filmed near Atlanta, and follow story lines from the comic book series by Robert Kirkman. The sixth season has been renewed before the fifth season has even aired, which indicates that the series may continue for several more seasons. The executive producers have previously mentioned that the show will run at least seven seasons.

On October 7 Entertainment Weekly posted the news that a spin-off series that would take place in the same world as the original series, has also been ordered by AMC. Robert Kirkman recently revealed that he has figured out the ending to the comic book story, although it is a long ways off. The series tends to loosely follow the comics but puts its own twist on the characters and locations.

The fifth season of the show will follow the prison survivors as they escape from Terminus, and will be some of the most violent episodes on the series to date. Everyone will be reunited and will travel to Washington D.C. in order to try to find a cure for the walker outbreak. Beth Greene, who has kidnapped last season, will be held in some sort of hospital, although her whereabouts will not be made clear immediately. The fifth season will debut on Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
